UDUPI:Neighbour held for woman’s murder
UDUPI: Prema alias Tunga, 32, resident of Golihole village in Byndoor, was murdered for gain. Accused Anand Naik murdered her with the intention of robbing her of her gold, police investigations have revealed. Prema went missing on April 25 and a case was registered in Byndoor police station in this regard.
Prema, a mother of two children, went missing after she visited Anand Naik, a neighbour. Suspecting Naik, police kept a close watch on his movements. On Tuesday evening, police found the skeletal remains of Prema near a forest in Jadkal area. The police who had let Anand go after initial interrogation summoned him again. He cracked and admitted to killing Prema, but kept changing his statements. He alleged that he had taken a supari from Prema’s sister and husband Raghavendra to kill her. of the victim.
However, on Thursday, police said that Anand lured Prema to his house promising to purchase an LIC scheme. Prema was an LIC agent. He then sprinkled chilli powder in her eyes and bludgeoned her with a hammer. Prema died on the spot. He then robbed her of her 24 grams of gold. Police are yet to recover the stolen gold. Earlier Byndoor police suspected that Prema’s sister and husband Raghavendra had a hand in the crime.
Prema and her sister Singari used to have frequent fights over a piece of property. Anand Naik, the accused was said to have admitted taken money from Singari for killing her sister, later changed his statements.
Yashoda S Ontigodi, Kundapur deputy superintendent of police, told TOI that investigations revealed that the lone motive of the murder was to rob Prema of her gold. Singari and Raghavendra were released after their detention, she added.
Naik was produced before the magistrate on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody till June 25.
