Print MANGALORE: Driven by passion for snakes, this 19-year-old boy abandoned engineering course in Bangalore and came to Mangalore. Adithya Puthraya, who is pursuing BSc course in the city, has so far rescued over 500 serpents which were found venturing into human habitations.
His affection towards reptiles began when he was a Class VI student and it grew manifold after he got chances to catch them. He started catching snakes and rescuing them on receiving calls from neighbours. His expertise, developed by reading books and watching TV programmes, now turned him into a saviour of sorts for many who are scared of snakes.
Adithya, a student of St Aloysius College, says he gets up to five calls from people every day. He has rescued several species, including Indian rock python, common cobra, saw scaled viper, Russell viper and non-venomous ones like rat snakes, kraits, checkered keelback and striped keelback. Rescued snakes are handed over to Pilikula Biological Park.
Initially, Ananthakrishna, a businessman and Shailaja, a homemaker, were apprehensive about their son’s hobby. However, later they too started encouraging him.
"Years ago, I accidentally placed my hand on a snake while swimming and that was a turning point in my life. Thereafter I started learning more about snakes. I managed to identify reptiles after reading ’Snakes of India’ by Romulus and watching TV programmes. I also seek advice from Dinesh and Vikram, snake experts of Pilikula Biological Park and snake catcher Joy Mascarenhas from Ujire," he said.
Adithya, who was pursuing BE in medical electronics at MVJ College in Bangalore, said: "I quit the course as there was no opportunity for me to see snakes. Initially, only my neighbours used to call me when snakes are seen, later the number of calls increased."

a snake 1.5 meters went and is hidden below the roof of our bunglow and times it comes out and found crawling over the tiles and going back and hiding in between the roof mangalore tiles.  Agree[0]
