Kaup: A couple died under mysterious circumstances at the Katapady Beedu in Pangala in Udupi district after their home caught fire on Tuesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Vijaya Shetty and his wife Chandrika Shetty.

Though preliminary investigation suggests that the house caught fire, it is suspected that the deceased themselves set it on fire as act of suicide.

Udupi Fire service personnel rushed to the spot at around 7.45 a.m. but the the victims could not be saved. The room in which the couple was sleeping was gutted completely with the two charred bodies inside it.

Vijay Shetty was working as supervisor in Navayug construction. They have a daughter studying in PUC.

Udupi District-in-charge Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake visited the spot.

Wall collapse in Udupi; woman dies

Udupi: A 25-year-old woman was killed when the walls of a house collapsed following heavy rain at Yelagoli Shivapur village in Karkala taluk of Udupi district on Monday night.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Poornima. She was sleeping inside the house along with her three children, husband Sundar and younger sister Pushpa when the mishap occurred. They were immediately taken to hospital. But Poornima succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

Meanwhile, intermittent rain continued to lash Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday. Following incomplete work on widening the road at Kolnadu, flood water entered houses. The boat which capsized near the estuary on Monday could not be pulled ashore due to rough waves.

The monsoon gained momentum in Uttara Kannada district. It drizzled in Bijapur and Haveri districts of North Karnataka.

Heavy rain that lashed Kodagu district receded on Tuesday. Madikeri, Napoklu, Sampaje, Bhagamandala, Virajpet, Hudikeri, Srimangala and other areas received moderate rain.

The inflow into the State from the reservoirs in Maharashtra decreased to 1.49 lakh cusecs on Tuesday, with rains receding in the neighbouring state. Most of the bridges in Chikodi taluk of Belgaum district continue to remain under water since July 17.

3,000 ration cards renewed in Udupi district

Udupi: 26,000 ration cards have been cancelled by the department of Food and Civil Supplies due to non submission of documents by the ration card holders. The ration card holders have also not shown any interest in renewing their ration cards.

A private franchise which was entrusted with the responsibility to collect data from the ration card holders two years ago had committed a mistake while entering the data which had led to the cancellation of the cards for which the public had endured long queues.

-As the problem was unique to the district, the department had asked all the ration card holders to submit their documents for renewing the ration cards. However, the ration card holders are not showing interest in submitting the documents to renew their ration cards,- said an official. -Bogus card holders are not coming forward to submit the documents. They fear from being caught while renewing the ration cards,- said the official. Department Deputy Director B Arun Kumar Sangavi said -the ration cards were cancelled owing to technical problem.

With the public showing nearly no interest in renewing their cards, only 3000 cards were renewed. According to sources, the last date of submitting the documents for renewalsis 31 August.
