If cattle is stolen by thretening inmates of house, then burglary or dacoity case can be filed against culprits, says M N Reddy

ADGP (Law and Order) M N Reddy has said that the police will initiate stern action against those indulging in illegal transportation and theft of cattle  in the district.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said the public should bring the issue of cattle theft to the notice of the police.

Any individual or group does not have any right to take law into their hands. “The police will act tough against cattle lifters and also against those who take law into their hands.

The public need not fear. We will take all measurers to prevent it. However, no vigilantism will be allowed. Vigilantism is a direct challenge to the authority in the State. Cattle theft is a sensitive issue and the police will be pro active in preventing it,” he said.

To a query on pressure from the ministers, IGP Pratap Reddy clarified that the police are not under pressure from any person or people.

“Whenever incidents have been brought to our notice, we have dealt with them under law and taken strict action has been initiated.” The ADGP said: “The Ministers and public can give suggestions to the police  and we will take it in the right spirit. The police are functioning within the framework of the law. The department has already increased patrolling across the State.”

If the cattle is stolen from cowsheds by thretening the inmates of the house, then burglary or dacoity case can be filed against the culprits, he added. 

Underworld activities

To a query on rise in underworld activities in Mangalore, the ADGP said that “the police have been directed to collect information on rowdies and underworld elements. Legal action will be initiated against them. The department will put down all the underworld activities with a firm hand.”

On shortage of staff in the department, he said that about 18,000 posts are lying vacant in the police department. The government has already announced recruiting of 8,500 police constables and head constables.

The shortage of staff will be solved in the next two to three years. At the sametime, the department should make use of the communication technology for better policing. The police are functioning professionally and are trying to prevent intensity of the crime.

The ADGP said that beat system will be strengthened in the State. The beat system helps police to be in contact with the public. The system is a challenge now for we are facing acute shortage of staff.

On police personnel lacking knowledge on Juvenile Justice Act, he said that the department has been continuously educating the police and various stakeholders on the JJ Act.
