Mumbai: NO AMENDMENTS TO RTI - Delegation meets MP, Ms Priya Dutt

Print MUMBAI: Civic activists on Friday met Congress MP Priya Dutt and urged her to intervene and not let her party pass amendments to the Right to Information (RTI) Act without consultations with citizens.
Dolphy D’Souza, convenor, Police Reforms Watch, Narayan Verma of People’s Concern for Governance Trust, Shyama Kulkarni of Action for Good Governance and Networking in India, RTI activists Mohammed Afzal, Sunil Ahya and P K Mukherjee were part of delegation.
They pointed out that the order of the chief information commissioner to include political parties in the ambit of the RTI would in the long run benefit the parties as it would rid them of all vested interests.
It would aid in strengthening democracy. Hence there is no need to pursue such an amendment,’’ said the delegation.
We have asked her to impress upon her party that the RTI must be referred to a Standing Committee of Parliament and there must be consultations with stakeholders that is citizens before any amendments are made to the Act,’’ said D’Souza.
He pointed out that the UPA has touted the implementation of the RTI Act as its achievement. In Parliament the government has said it will not amend the Act without consultation with citizens then why bring the amendments so surreptitiously?’’ they asked Dutt.
The MP, they said, has assured them that she will convey their concerns to the party.
Early this week activists across Mumbai had held demonstrations outside railway stations demanding that the RTI Act be untouched.
D’Souza said they are trying to meet other MPs from Mumbai to convey to them their opposition to the amendments to the sunshine law. We hope to meet all of them by next week,’’ he said. Of the six Lok Sabha constituencies five are represented by the Congress and one by the Nationalist Congress Party.
