Print MANGALORE: Meat vendors in the city have urged home minister K J George to ensure security for their business in the wake of instances of attack on cattle transporters.
Vendors, who have license to sell beef, demanded that the government provide a conducive environment for transportation of cattle and sale of meat. They allege that fringe groups take law into their hands by assaulting those who transport beef even with a valid licence.
There are 28 licensed stalls in the city, including Central Market, Jeppu, Kadri, Kankanady, Kaikamba, Bejai and Urwa Store that sell beef. All these have to buy beef from an authorised abattoir at Kudroli which is run by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).
Ali Hassan, president of Jamiyathul Sa-ada Association, an organisation of meat vendors, told STOI that many stall owners face difficulty while transporting beef from Kudroli to their stalls as there is an atmosphere of apprehension. "Vendors are often targeted whenever cow theft instances occur. The district administration and police fail to take action against those who steal cows. The authorities concerned should allow beef vendors to carry out their business smoothly," Ali said, adding that adequate protection should be given for vehicles that transport beef to licensed stalls.
"We have to procure beef with official seal only from the MCC’s abattoir where cattle are slaughtered after certification by veterinarians. The abattoir at Kudroli is functioning according to the legal framework," he said.
There were several instances wherein vendors are assaulted by fringe groups in the name of opposing cattle slaughtering. Miscreants also damage vehicles and steal mobiles from those who transport beef legally," Ali said, adding that a memorandum has been submitted to the home minister.
