Udupi residents for more Aadhaar enrolment centres

Print UDUPI: People in Udupi district are finding it difficult to enroll their names for Aadhar cards as there are only three Aadhaarenrolmentcentres for a population of 12 lakh.
As of now 6,17,759 people in the district have enrolled for Aadhaar cards. In all, 8,62,731 people have enrolled for National Population Register (NPR) in the district and these people need not again enroll for Aadhaar card as they will get it.
However 3,03,129 NPR applicants have already enrolled for Aadhaar cards. Need for Aadhaar card has emerged as there are still several lakhs of people in the district who have neither applied for NPR, nor for Aadhaar. The three centres are operating in post offices in Udupi, Kundapur and Byndoor.
Only 50 persons are able to enrol in a day in the centers in Kundapur and Byndoor. The centre in Udupi has been provided with additional computer system which helps 100 enrolments each day.
There has been a demand to open more Aadhaar enrolment centres in the district. People in Karkala taluk in Udupi district are demanding one as they have to travel about 32 kilometers to reach Udupi.
K Sanjeev Shetty, president of Pragathipara Nagarika Seva Samiti, Karkala taluk, said: "The district administration should open an Aadhaar enrolment centre in Karkala as it’s a taluk in Udupi district."
Narayan Naik, a resident of Hebri, also said Karkala is in dire need of an Aadhar enrolment centre. Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar said he has asked the deputy commissioner of Udupi district to open an Aadhaar centre in Karkala taluk office or in taluk panchayat building and that the DC has assured of opening it soon. Sunil Kumar also said that if not on all working days, an Aadhaar enrolment centre can be made to function in Karkala at least three days in a week.
