Bangalore: In a shocking incident, an engineering student was allegedly murdered by his close friends in Attur Layout here on January 14 after a fake kidnap plot went horribly wrong.

The police recovered Tushar Mehto’s decomposed body from a eucalyptus grove in Attur Layout Friday noon following the arrest of four persons, including a dance bar girl and her husband.
The 21-year-old Patna native was a student of Sri Krishna Institute of Technology near Hesaraghatta and lived a rented house near his college.
“We arrested four persons, including a couple, on Friday and are investigating,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East Division) Ravikanthe Gowda told The Hindu.
The suspects
The officer named the suspects as Rohit (24), real estate agent hailing from Ranchi in Jharkhand, his wife Shivani (21), her sister Preethi (19) and their friend Varish (21). While Varish is a native of Patna, the sisters are from Agra.
The arrested were demanding a Rs. 9 lakh ransom from Tushar’s father Pramod Mehto, a contractor in Patna, even as the student’s body lay in the eucalyptus grove, the DCP added.
Investigations into the case revealed that Tushar used to visit dance bar girls.
On January 14, he accompanied the Shivani and Preethi to Esteem Mall near Hebbal Lake. Later, all the three went to Rohit’s house in Attur Layout.
Rohit, who was not at home at the time, came later with Varish, a dropout from Sambhram College of Engineering. All the five consumed liquor and hatched a plan to extort money from Tushar’s father Pamod Mehto, said a police officer familiar with the investigation.
They told Tushar they would call his father pretending to be kidnappers and extort Rs. 9 lakh from him.
Changes his mind
Though initially Tushar went along with the plan, once he turned fully drunk, he turned against his friends and refused to cooperate.
In the ensuing fracas, Varish stabbed him in the stomach with a broken liquor bottle. Tushar bled to death, DCP Ravikanthe Gowda said.
The suspects moved the body to the eucalyptus grove and dumped it near a pit. Then Rohit made a series of calls to Tushar’s father demanding ransom, he said. Mr. Mehto arrived here on the night of January 18 and filed a case of kidnap in the Amrithahalli police station.
The police arrested Rohit on Friday when he came to “collect” the ransom amount. After interrogating him, the police arrested other three and also recovered the body.
Mr. Mehto was wracked by sobs on seeing his son’s decomposed remains.
The police recovered bloodstained clothes, mobile phones and a car from the suspects
