DGCA approves state-of-the-art ATM system for Mangalore International Airport

Print MANGALORE: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has accorded approval to Airports Authority of India (AAI) to commission the state-of-the-art technology-based automated air traffic management system Aircon 2100 at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) at Kenjar here. Aircon 2100 installed around a year back at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore has undergone extensive field trials before DGCA issued licence to it.
J T Radhakrishna, director, MIA said Aircon 2100 is one of the most advanced automated air traffic control system which meets International Civil Aviation Organisation’s standard and recommended practices in air traffic management. Procured from Indra, Spain, the system has undergone vigorous safety assessment with field trials in shadow mode before its commissioning, he said, adding the trials were carried out for one year.
The system enhances safety of lights by providing air traffic controllers with information of air movements from radar, flight plans, direction finders and air-ground data link messages. It also provides high degree of automation of control tasks with flight plan management tools, automatic flight tracking system, automatic coordination between control positions and control centres, safety nets, and medium term traffic conflict prediction tools.
The system is capable of processing data from other radar feeds such as Bangalore, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram and displayed at Mangalore to increase the area of radar coverage. The control tool provided by the system assists controllers in decision making and judgement, for safe handling of traffic and reduces their workload. The controllers get warning whenever safety of aircraft is going to be infringed due to collision or other factors.
