Manmohan, Sonia visit Muzaffarnagar, PM says guilty will be punished

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul visited riot-affected Muzaffarnagar on Monday, a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav faced the wrath of angry riot victims.
"Perpetrators of communal riots in Muzaffarnagar district will be given the strictest punishment, Manmohan said.
"I am here to share your pain," Singh said consoling people displaced by the violence in a refugee camp in Bassi Kalan village.
Singh reached the riot-hit district at 10.30 AM and spent around half-an-hour in the camp in which members from the Muslim community have taken shelters.
Talking to reporters after listening to the people living in the camp, Singh termed last week’s riots as a "major incident".
"Our priority and efforts would be that people displaced are sent back home," he said while assuring all help to the UP government in restoring normalcy in the area.
Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi also interacted with the people living in the relief camp. Sonia moved away from the barricade and interacted with women refugees sheltered there.
The PM’s last visit to riot-affected areas was in Assam last year. A meeting of the National Integration Council (NIC) has also been convened on September 23 to discuss the increasing communal incidents.
Manmohan’s visit to Muzaffarnagar comes a day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav toured few of the riot-hit villages. However, wherever Akhilesh went, anger followed him. The CM promised government jobs and swift justice to the victims but got a tepid response from locals.
The Samajwadi Party is facing flak from Muslim leaders and organisations for its failure to protect their lives and properties.
