Alcoholism dwindles number of Koragas in Udupi

UDUPI: A progress review meeting of Koraga community, organized jointly by taluk committee of Koragas and the Federation of Koraga Development Associations, Karnataka-Kerala, was held at the taluk panchayat hall here on Tuesday.
Delivering the key-note address Gowri Koraga, Kenjoor, former president of the federation, said Koragas are victims of poverty and untouchability. "As per a census conducted in 2006, the population of Koragas in the district is 6,300 and there are 1166 Koraga families here. Their numbers are on the decrease because of lack of healthcare facilities and alcoholism," she said.
"School dropout rate is very high among Koraga children and authorities concerned should take action regarding this. Anthyodaya Anna Yojane should be made available to all Koraga families in the district. Koragas are eligible to get a grant of Rs 1,25,000 for constructing houses under the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP). This should be increased to Rs 5,00,000," she added.
Udupi MLA, Pramod Madhwaraj, said, "Koragas are shy in nature. They never come forward to demand their rights. The administration should make sure that it goes to their doorsteps. Panchayat development officers and village accountants have been instructed to ensure that all Koraga families get BPL cards."
Dr P V Bhandary, director, Dr A V Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi, and Bogra Koraga were felicitated on the occasion. They played major roles in de-addicting several Koragas. Tahsildar Guruprasad, taluk panchayat president Gowri Poojari, taluk panchayat executive officer D Manjunathaiah and others were present.
