 MANGALORE: A delegation comprising leaders from various sections of the society submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner N Prakash seeking action to prevent people from defaming Sri Kshetra Dharmastala and dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade in connection with the rape and murder of Nirmala (name changed), II PU student of SDM College, Ujire who was raped and murdered on October 9, 2012.

In the memorandum, they urged the district administration to take action against those who put up banners and make public statements defaming the sanctity of Sri Kshetra Dharmastala in connection with the rape and murder of Ujire girl. The delegation urged that legal action be initiated against Mahesh Shetty Thimarody, who levelled allegations against Heggade and his kin in connection with the rape and murder. Further, they also urged the district administration to take action against those who flourish the nude picture of the girl and thereby tarnish the sanctity of a religious shrine.

The 50 member delegation included JD(S) leader Amarnath Shetty, BJP leaders Rukmaiah Poojari, Kumble Sundar Rao, Congress leaders Mohiuddin Bawa, Mithun Rai, State Kannada Sahitya Parishat former president Harikrishna Punaroor, litterateur Erya Laxminarayana Alva, SDM Law College principal BK Ravindra, SDM Business Management College principal K Devaraj and CREDAI Mangalore president Pushparaj Jain.

Michigan State University, NITK ink pact on summer internships, faculty exchange

MANGALORE: National Institute of Technology - Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal in its endeavour to give students best professional exposure that will keep them abreast of latest technological developments has signed memoranda of understanding with leading acclaimed academic institutions and leading industries in India. One such MoU with Michigan State University will give NITK students and faculty the opportunity to do summer internships there.

Sushil Chandra Tripathi, chairman, board of governors - NITK, Surathkal who announced this MoU at the 11th annual convocation of the Institute here on Saturday said Michigan State University is ranked 94th in the world university rankings given by Times Higher Education. This MoU besides taking care of the summer internships will also held the faculty to interact with their counterparts and spur them to undertake joint research projects, he said.

Swapan Bhattacharya, director, NITK later told reporters that the student internship can last anywhere from three to six months. "Students of NITK can get practical laboratory oriented training during their internship and also the opportunity to pursue projects in various disciplines and this will also facilitate faculty exchange at a bilateral level," Swapan said. "In fact, staff from MSU visited NITK as part of the MoU recently," he added.

Satish Udpa, executive vice-president for administrative services, Michigan State University, who was the chief guest at the convocation said his university is planning joint workshop on organic light emitting diodes in next month. "A joint research project too is mooted wherein oil cakes and oil seed covers will be converted in biofuel (ethanol) and faculty from the university and the Institute will work out the modalities about it shortly," Udpa said.

Sri Dharmasthala Kshetra undertakes Shuddha Ganga Project at Rs 3.5cr

Beltangady: Dharmasthala Kshetra has donated Rs 3.5cr to to Shuddha Ganga project, an initiative through which thousands of families will get access to pure drinking water.
 
The project is introduced owing to the usage of water filled with fluoride, chloride, arsenic etc by the villagers and thus falling sick.
 
The project ‘Shuddha Ganga’, was thus introduced by the Kshetra chaired by Dr. Veerendra Heggade.
 
60 units have been created in 20 districts through which pure water is being provided to every house. The beneficiaries are supposed to pay 10paise per litre. Hence 600 litres of water is provided to the villagers every month for which they are charged Rs 60.
 
Over 10 lac litres of water is supplied to about 35,000 families every month.
 
The project is actively carried out in Chikmagalur, Gadag, Haveri, Dharwad, Hassan and Tumkur among 20 districts and 200 villages.
 
The total cost involved in the project id 5.97cr involved out of which Rs 3.56cr from Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Village Development Scheme, 15lac from Zilla Panchayat, Rs 80lac from Malenad Development Board and Rs 1.46cr from ministers, Village Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat.
