AIDS: Udupi moves into yellow zone

Print UDUPI: The Udupi district, which was in the red zone, has moved into the yellow zone with 518 people getting tested positive for HIV till October 2013.
The district, which reported 1021 positive cases in 2010, saw a declining trend in this regards, thanks to several initiatives of the district AIDS control Unit.
Udupi taluk topped the list with 375 cases this year. This was followed by Kundapur taluk with 101 positive cases and Karkala with 42 cases. As many as 161 positive cases were detected among people hailing from other districts.
The district has also managed to control effectively the transmission of HIV from mother to child during pregnancy. The statistics from the department of health and family welfare indicate that their number has reduced to 10 this year from the 32 cases last year.
Dr H Ashok, district AIDS control officer, said that the district unit aims at achieving zero HIV positive cases in Udupi. ’’Though the figures show that Udupi taluk has the highest number of positive cases, it is not true. This is because people from other districts are coming for tests in a private hospital in Manipal. Otherwise, Kundapur taluk has the most positive cases and about 45 per cent of the total positive cases reported are from that taluk," he added.
The department has requested MP K Jayaprakash Hegde to sanction funds for opening an Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) center at the taluk hospital in Kundapur.
This year till October, 459 persons have joined the pre-ART center. As many as 3,047 patients have availed services at the ART+ Center situated near the district government hospital in Ajjarakad from the time of its inauguration in July 2008 till today.
