Eight oilfield workers died in a fatal accident on Al Hamim road in Abu Dhabi on Friday morning. The van they were travelling in collided with a heavy truck. While two of the deceased are reported to be UAE nationals the others hail from Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, according to informed sources.
The impact of the collision resulted in the van breaking into a ball of flame, said family members of the victims.
All the deceased were going towards their workplace at about 11 am, when their van collided with a heavy truck killing them.
Two of the victims – including Thomas Peter, 53, - are from Kerala. Thomas had just returned from holiday in November. He has been in the UAE for the last 25 years. He had moved to this job only two years ago.
Details of other victims, including two UAE nationals, are awaited.
Earlier this year, a major bus-truck collision in February in Abu Dhabi had claimed the lives of at least 24 Asian workers, mainly from Bangladesh.
Traffic snarls delay Sharjah-Dubai commuters on Sunday
Commuters from Sharjah to Dubai have had a delayed start to the work week, what with three huge roadblocks reported during the morning hours today [Sunday].
The Dubai Police reported heavy traffic congestion on routes that link Sharjah to Dubai.
“There is #traffic congestion on the following roads : Please drive safely and carefully.
“1) Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed road from Sharjah towards Dubai.
“2) Etihad road from Sharjah towards Dubai.”
They also tweeted that the Airport tunnel from Al Qusais towards Al Rashidiya was blocked.
