Police add rape, gang rape charges in Mangalore kidnap case

Print MANGALORE: Mangalore City Police on Sunday clarified that the investigating officer in the kidnap and blackmail case has submitted a memo to the jurisdictional court to add sections 376 (rape) and 376D (gang rape) of IPC in crime number 192/2013.
The officer attached to Konaje police station submitted the memo on Friday.
A clarification posted in the official blog of city police also sought to assure the citizens that it will conduct a thorough investigation and file chargesheet to the court as soon as possible.
Reacting to statements issued by some people in the media regarding the investigation of Konaje police PS crime number 192/2013, city police chief R Hithendra said the clarification has been issued to place correct facts before the people. The case was registered on December 19 based on written complaint by the victim. While receiving the complaint, the police officer concerned suspected that it involved invoking section 376 IPC and questioned the complainant.
The clarification states the complainant did not cooperate with the investigating officer for medical examination and denied rape. The complainant also requested the officer not to give publicity to the case.
During investigation, police had launched a massive operation to nab the suspects and were able to apprehend all the accused within 48 hours.
All the accused are in judicial custody.
The victims’ statement was recorded under section 164 CrPC before the magistrate and the same was made available to the investigating officer on the evening of January 2.
Based on the investigation conducted so far, the officer filed a memo to the court to add sections 376 and 376D IPC to the case on January 3, Hithendra said.
Police will submit the chargesheet in the court well within the time frame stipulated by law against all the accused, Hithendra said.
