Bangalore : Lokayukta will get free hand to prosecute corrupt babus

Print BANGALORE: The Karnataka government is set to sanction the prosecution of nearly 100 officers accused of corruption.
On orders from chief minister Siddaramaiah, chief secretary Kaushik Mukherjee wrote to all principal secretaries and secretaries on January 13 asking them to submit a list of employees facing corruption cases under the Lokayukta Act by January 31.
"Sanction for prosecution will be given, regardless of rank and position, and the Lokayukta can handle the cases. The department heads have to submit the list by the month-end," Mukherjee told TOI on Thursday. A letter communicating the government’s decision was sent to Lokayukta Justice Y Bhaskar Rao on Thursday.
Justice Rao had recently said he would seek governor HR Bhardwaj’s intervention if the state government delayed sanction to prosecute officers accused of corruption.
Though past governments often promised the Lokayukta of sanction to prosecute the corrupt, it was never given.
With corruption being one of its planks in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, the Siddaramaiah government is trying to portray a clean image when it comes to dealing with corrupt officials.
"The credibility of the government is at stake when an institution like the Lokayukta is not respected. The watchdog asked the government for sanction to prosecute corrupt officials, and we are giving permission," Mukherjee said.
In the past, the government has taken severe action, including sacking some officers against whom the department had recommended minor punishment.
There are 94 officers and other employees who have come under the Lokayukta’s scanner. Once the Lokayukta prosecutes the officer and recommends action, the cabinet will decide the next course of action. The last cabinet meeting dismissed two top government doctors on the Lokayukta’s recommendation.
