 Mangalore : The Customs Officials at Mangalore International Airport  (MIA) were successful in foiling three smuggling attempts on Tuesday, February 4. In totality they were successful in seizing gold worth Rs. 65.29 lacs.

Gold coils weighing 999.650 grams valued at Rs 29, 78,957  was seized from Basheed Choori Abdul Rahiman of Uliyathadukka om Kasargod. Basheed  had concealed the gold in electric hot plate. While two gold wires valued at Rs 20,85,702 from passenger named Nazar Thekkupuram, resident of Thekkupuram, Pallikere, Kasargod.  The gold wires weighing 699.900 grams were concealed as aluminum frame of the suitcase.

Gold circular plates weighing  491.650 grams worth Rs. 14,65,117 was seized from two insulated hot cases from a passenger identified as Abdul Sathar Kasaragod of Pallikere, Kasargod.
 
Basheed Choori Abdul Rahiman had arrived to MIA by Jet Airways flight (5.30 a.m) 9W531 from Dubai, while Nazar Thekkupuram  and Abdul Sathar arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight IX814 (7.45 a.m).

Subramanya: College students demand additional govt buses

Subramanya: “Bus being the primary means of transport for the pre-university and degree students of in and around Subramanya, the imbalance in the ratio of the number of students and the public transport has posed several problems. The students are deprived of regular attendance as the wait for buses extend upto hours,” complained Shiva Kumar, student leader.
 
“A few students travel more than 40 kms to the educational institutions located in Subramanya. Although the government has provided bus passes, the students are not able to make the most of it as since the buses get crowded in the initial stops itself, the drivers do not bother frequenting the stops. Exams being on the verge of commencement, the students are finding it hard to manage the stress of both exam preparations and the journey. Hence, the government must introduce additional buses in this area,” he said.
 
 
“The students will be compelled to stage protests if the government fails to cater to the needs of the students,” cautioned Shiva Kumar.
