After ghostly knocks, ban orders clamped on Ullal

Print MANGALORE: Whether it was just a prank or a prelude to criminal activity is not clear, but the midnight knock on the front door spooked Ullal.
It’s said that a person came knocking on the doors of houses where the men were away. Residents of Mogaveerapatna attempted to nab the culprit, but he reportedly gave them the slip. The issue soon turned into a cause of communal strife, and sparked off tension in the sensitive Ullal police limits.
on Wednesday beefed up security and imposed prohibitory orders in the area up to 6pm on February 8, in view of the simmering tension. The department has drafted three KSRP platoons, 20 officers and 100 personnel from outside the city units to maintain law and order.
DCP (law and order) KV Jagadeesh said this step was taken after locals informed police about the knocking incidents which had been going on for the past three or four days. Rather than bring it to the notice of police, the residents decided to keep watch and try and nab the accused themselves. Late on Tuesday, they spotted a person who crept up and attempted to knock on some doors. They chased him but he managed to slip away, and left his motorbike behind. The angry mob vented its fury on the bike, damaging it.
In retaliation, people from another community pelted stones on houses, damaged a car and set two boats on fire. The tiled roof of a house was also damaged.
Incidentally, police had a tough time on Wednesday appealing to locals to maintain calm. Women gathered in large numbers in front of Ullal police station and demanded action.
Mangalore South ACP Pawan Nejur and Jagadeesh are personally monitoring the situation in the absence of city police chief R Hithendra.
