Cops warned for not registering cases
Home Minister K J George has warned of severe action against police officers who refuse to register complaints citing lack of jurisdiction.
“Police officials have been strictly instructed to register complaints first and then transfer them to jurisdictional police stations. A circular has already been issued in this regard. But, some officials have been violating the directive and strict action will be against them in the days to come,” the minister said on Friday. He was speaking after inaugurating “Spandana Complex” at Malleswaram in the City.
George said that Karnataka police have earned a good name across the country.
“Our policemen are appreciated for their calibre at many events held across the country.
They are doing a good job. However, there are some elements which have indulged in corrupt practices and the chief minister has directed action against them,” George said. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had made scathing comments against the police force at the inauguration of senior police officers’ conference, recently.
Referring to Malleswaram MLA Dr C N Ashwath Narayan’s allegation that “hafta” was being collected from club owners at the “government level,” the minister said that action will be initiated if such instances were brought to his notice. He asked the senior police officers not to yield to any pressure while discharging their duties.
Speaking to reporters, George said that according to police, the charge sheet in Rector K J Thomas case would be filed in a month. He reiterated that a meeting of stakeholders would soon be called on extending night life in the City. Dr Ashwath Narayan stressed public participation in ensuring social development and said nothing could be achieved without the support of the public. “It is virtually impossible to deploy a traffic policeman at every junction and busy street. The public should also join hands to ensure safety. They should believe in collective social responsibility,” he said.
