Print MANGALORE: In the wake of reports that primaries (internal election) for Mangalore Lok Sabha constituency had been cancelled, taking into account veteran Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary’s seniority, the two candidates in the fray are not resting easy.
With no official confirmation, both Poojary and Harsha Moily, son of Union petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily, are continuing to woo voters before the primaries, scheduled for February end.
Top Congress sources said the party was keen on holding primaries to both Mangalore and Bangalore North. AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi, the brain behind the primaries, is said to be firm that the party should now drop its traditional ways of nominating candidates.
Internal elections to choose a candidate was one way of decentralizing the selection process. Primaries to the 15 Lok Sabha constituencies are expected to set the trend for the exercise to become a part of the party’s process in future elections, sources said.
Poojary told TOI, "Somebody is trying to make me lower my guard by saying the primaries are being cancelled. I welcomed the decision and I’m prepared for the primaries.’’
Harsha, too, is in poll mode. "No one told me the primaries for Mangalore are cancelled. The high command announced just a few weeks ago that this is one of the constituencies for the experiment. Nothing has changed since then,’’ he said.
One of the eligible voters is an aspirant. KPCC secretary Ivan D’Souza admitted there was confusion since there was no official word about the cancellation. "If it’s on, I’m in the race too,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, party workers felt the primaries should be cancelled as they would lead to needless confusion and may prove counter-productive during the actual poll, in case of groupism.
