Udupi: Social worker’s death; three arrested

Print MANGALORE: City police arrested three persons in connection with the alleged murder of social worker Gangadhar Pangal at Surathkal on May 14, 2013.
The arrested are Bhaskar Baikampady, Harish Baikampady and Puspharaj from Udupi. They have been remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday night. The prime accused in the case, Satish Baikampady, is absconding.
Pangal was returning home on his two-wheeler, after attending a nemotsava at Surathkal, when the accused allegedly used a Bolero to ram into his vehicle. The scene of the accident gave enough clues to the police to indicate that this was a case of murder and not accident. Further investigation by police and the CCTV footage at the Goods Railway Station showed that the Bolero vehicle involved in the accident was in lying in wait for a long time. Based on these clues, the vehicle belonging to Pushparaj of Udupi was seized. The vehicle owner confessed that the vehicle was borrowed by Satish and he was also in the vehicle during the incident.
It may be recalled that members of Mangalore Elupatna Mogaveera Samyuktha Sabha and Urwa Mariyamma temple committee on Tuesday had submitted a memorandum to the city police commissioner urging him to conduct a thorough probe into the death of Pangal, suspecting it to be a case of murder.
The police after arresting Bhaskar, had kept a watch on the mobile activity of Satish. On the basis of mobile activity, when police raided an office of a criminal lawyer, they instead found Satish’s brother Harish and he was taken into custody.
Police said that internal bickering in the Baikampady Mogaveera Mahasabha and Urva Mariyamma temple committee administrative membership led to the murder. Satish was an aspirant for the membership of Mariamma temple committee.
The Mahasabha president Yashawanth Mendon has also asked for investigation into an attempt on the life of H Gangadhara, an advocate. Gangadhara had escaped miraculously in an accident on May 14, 2013.
