Print With Narendra Modi making it clear that he would not tolerate any lobbying, the BJP top brass is upset over former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s letter to him expressing his willingness to work for the party.
“Yeddyurappa’s letter to Modi is uncalled-for. Besides, it is surprising that the letter was released to the media,” a senior leader said.
None of the party leaders informed Yeddyurappa whether he would be made a minister. The party left it to Modi to finalise his team and nobody is interfering in it, he said.
Suspecting that Yeddyurappa is trying to pressure Modi to induct him into the ministry, the party leader said: “If he is aspiring for any post, he could have conveyed it to party president Rajnath Singh instead of going to the media.”
Though the party leaders credited Yeddyurappa with winning 17 seats in Karnataka after the drubbing in the last year’s Assembly polls, central leaders suspect that some of his close associates are misleading and instigating the Lingayat leader.
After the government formation at the Centre, party leaders are likely to summon Yeddyurappa and advise him not to go to the media on any issue.
Apparently, after getting the hint from the central leadership that he would not be made a minister in the new government, Yeddyurappa, on Thursday, wrote a letter to Modi saying he was willing to work for the party.
The party leaders were clearly told not to speak to the media and air any speculative stories. Even instructions have gone to BJP spokespersons to brief media just as briefed by the party leaders and not to cross the ‘Lakshman Rekha.’
When a delegation of Uttar Pradesh MPs went to Gujarat Bhawan to meet Modi on Thursday night, they were turned back at the gates as they didn’t have an appointment. When they sought an appointment from Modi, nobody responded.
