In the wake of attack in Bangalore on a northeast Indian student on Tuesday night, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, in a telephonic conversation with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said that there should be no discrimination against anyone on the basis of caste, creed and sect.
Mr. Rajnath Singh later said, “The Karnataka Chief Minister informed me that the police responded quickly and arrested all those who attacked the northeast Indian students. There should be no discrimination against anyone in our country on the basis of caste, creed or sect.”
Meanwhile, Kothanur police on Thursday opened rowdy sheets against the three arrested for attacking Manipuri student Michael Lamjathang Haokip near Byrathi Bande, Hennur on Tuesday night.
Rowdy sheets were opened against Arun Kumar (26), James (23) and Karunakar (25) after the northeast student community residing in the area complained that the gang often harassed students from the community and had unleashed a reign of terror in the area.
A senior police official said that they were probing as to whether the gang was involved in any other similar assaults.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi met the attacked Manipuri student, Micheal Lamjathang Haokip, and heard him. He later told The Hindu that the victim told him that the attackers had insisted that he should speak in Kannada.
He further said that there was a large northeast Indian community in the city and he would take all steps necessary for their safety and ensure that the city doesn’t turn an unfriendly city.
