Uddav Thackeray inaugurated Refurbished casualty ward  at KEM Hospital

Mumbai, Nov 18, 2014: The reconstructed emergency and trauma care unit at KEM Hospital, Parel, is ready to serve patients. While the makeshift casualty ward was functioning in shambles during the two-year construction period, the swanky new 20,800 square foot structure now has an increased bed capacity and more doctors.

Built at a cost of Rs 3.2 crore, the centrally air-conditioned casualty ward in BMC’s largest tertiary hospital incorporates four departments — Emergency Paediatric Room (EPR), Orthopaedic trauma care, Emergency Medicine Room (EMR) and Emergency Surgery Room (ESR). The capacity of beds has also been increased from 31 to 78 beds. Close to 800 patients visit KEM’s casualty ward daily for treatment.

Doctors said that the new trauma unit is well designed to receive critical patients in the eight-bed triage area from where they would be transferred to the surgical or medicine department. The surgical and orthopaedic emergency services consist of a 17-bed intensive care unit (ICU) with a six-bed incubation unit attached to it. "The patients will be received and assessed in the triage area from where they will be transferred to respective wards; and if they need to be stabilised further, they will be kept in the incubation unit," said Dr Pravin Bangar, senior medical officer at the hospital.

While the earlier trauma unit had 33 beds, 13 ICU beds and one surgeon, the revamped casualty ward has 41 beds, 37 ICU beds, four surgeons and an in-house unit to conduct endoscopy, which involves looking inside the body for medical reasons.
The EMR department includes 25 general beds and 16 ICU beds, including a fourteen-bed area that is reserved for children in the Emergency Paediatric Room (EPR). Each bed has independent supply of oxygen. To prevent spoilage, the beds are also water-proof.

The casualty ward further includes an in-house pathology laboratory and pharmacy for quick testing of samples and supply of medicines. Moreover, there is a plaster room and a sterilising room in the unit to cater to fracture patients and sterilise medical equipment. The new unit was inaugurated by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday, November 18.
