Govt. urged to allow Konkani from Class 1
MANGALURU: While welcoming the decision of the State Government to make instructions in Kannada compulsory for Classes 1 to 5, the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy has demanded that Konkani should be allowed as a second optional language from Class 1.
Academy president Ronald Sebastian Castelino said that the academy would support the decision of the government to strengthen Kannada from the primary level. Experts have stressed the need to teach in the mother tongue, he noted.
He said the Konkani is allowed, at present, as a third optional language from Class 6 onwards. Instead it should be allowed as a second language for Konkani speakers from Class 1.
He pointed out that Konkani – spoken by Hindus, Muslims and Christians in the State – was a Scheduled language having found place in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. About 15.20 lakh Konkani speaker are there in Karnataka and the language could face globalisation only if it got a fair chance.
Deputy Director of Public Instruction Walter D’Mello said under the existing policy there is no provision to introduce a second language at Class 1. English is taught as second language from Class 5 and Hindi from Class 6.
Currently, Konkani is allowed from Class 6 onwards
