The infamous attack on partygoers in a pub near the busy Ambedkar Circle reported in the city six years ago and the attack on young men and women at a home stay reported two years ago here are yet to reach the stage of trial before the respective courts.

These two cases are among the alleged vigilante attacks that created anxiety among students coming from different parts of the country to study in medical and engineering colleges here.

In both the cases, the courts are yet to frame charges against the accused. The proceedings of the pub attack case resumed in October last year following vacation of stay granted by the Karnataka High Court six years ago.

In the home stay case, the court is yet to decide on the petition of prosecution withdrawing the case against reporter Naveen Soorinje, who was among the two media persons on the spot — who were instrumental in bringing the incident to light.

The police arrested 29 persons including advocate Dinakar Shetty, who was accused of supporting the act of the assaulters before the media. The accused were charged, among others, under Section 324 (causing hurt with dangerous weapons) of Indian Penal Code.

In July 2009, Mr. Shetty obtained from the Karnataka High Court a stay on further proceedings in the case pending before the II Judicial Magistrate First Class. This petition was dismissed by the High Court in October 2014. “The case is now fixed on Thursday for framing charges,” Mr. Shetty told The Hindu .

Charges not framed

Following the attack on young men and women partying at a home stay, the Mangaluru Rural police filed a charge-sheet against 44 persons, including media persons Naveen Soorinje and Sharan, of dacoity, assault on women with intent to outrage modesty. On June 14, 2013, the Siddaramaiah government decided to withdraw the case against Mr. Soorinje.

When the petition of the prosecution seeking withdrawal of the case came up for hearing in January, the II Additional District and Sessions Judge said it will decide after hearing the other accused in the case. “We are yet to file our objections to the petition,” said Advocate Kishore Kumar, who is representing some of the accused. The case has been posted to April 30 for framing of charges.
