Kaup beach to offer village tourism and scuba diving

MANGALURU: The next time you visit Kaup beach, about 13 km south of Udupi, you may get an opportunity to go diving into the deep blue waters. You can also stay comfortably in one of the villages on the pristine coast and enjoy the rural environs. For, the Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project (PBTDP) has planned to introduce scuba-diving and promote village tourism at the beach.
Kaup beach is known for its famed light house built in 1901. PBTDP has won the bid to develop and maintain the beach for the next five years.
PBTDP has developed and maintained Panambur beach, in a first of its kind initiative by any private enterprise. Now it will take up Kaup beach for development.
Yatish Baikampady, CEO of the project said: "We want to develop Kaup beach with an inclusive approach of empowering local youth and villagers. The area has three villages on the coast -- Muloor, Kaup and Polipu. We are exploring the idea of village tourism and home stay concepts to project Kaup as a family tourist destination. We are in talks with village elders to take this forward,’’ he said. Also, for the first time, scuba diving will be introduced on the coast on a regular basis.
"There’s an excellent spot about 10 nautical miles off Kaup coast. Divers trained by PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) will be deployed for this activity," Yatish said.
After PBTDP took over, Panambur emerged as the most popular beach in coastal Karnataka, according to the department of tourism. The beach located a km away from NH 66 receives an average tourist footfall of 5,000 to 10,000 persons a year. This is highest for any of the 41 beaches in the three coastal districts.
Cleanliness and safety are the two unique aspects that make Panambur beach most sought after by tourists, said Yathish.
