A painter, allegedly responsible for damaging the glass casing of a statue at St. Joseph Vaz Prayer Hall, has been arrested by the city police. According to the police, he was disgruntled because he was paid low remuneration for work at the hall.
The glass casing of the statue of ‘Our Lady of Mercy’ at the Deralakatte prayer hall was found damaged on February 24.
S. Murugan, Police Commissioner, told presspersons on Tuesday that the prayer hall authorities had hired Anand (30), a resident of Kinya village, for painting the hall. But he left the work two weeks ahead of the incident as he was unhappy with the remuneration. He has told the police that he threw stones at the glass casing out of frustration. Based on inputs given by residents nearby, police questioned Anand who admitted to throwing stones, the Police Commissioner said.
Anand after consuming liquor with a friend had thrown stones at the casing, according to the police. Anand has been booked under Sections 427 (act of mischief) and 295 (destroying or defiling place of worship) of the Indian Penal Code.
Mr. Murugan said the police had written to authorities of the prayer hall and other religious institutions to install closed-circuit television cameras on their premises. Those who had installed poor quality cameras had been asked to replace them.
