At least 150 students, including 2 attackers, killed in Kenya’s Garissa University attack
Kenya’s National Police Service said in a written statement that armed attackers forced their way onto the campus by shooting at guards, triggering a "fierce shootout" with police guarding student hostels. However, the attackers managed to get into the hostels. (Source: Google Maps)
In a statement on Twitter, the ministry said Thursday: “Two terrorists have been neutralised in the ongoing operation. Security agencies intensify rescue operation.”
Interior Minister Joseph Nkaissery said that most students at Garissa University College that was attacked by al-Shabab gunmen remain unaccounted for, more than 11 hours after the attack started.
Nkaissery said: “Garissa University college has a student population of 815 and about 60 members of teaching staff, as of now we are able to account for 292 students and all the staff.”
An unknown number of hostages are being held. Many students scattered when the attack began at 5:30 am.
India strongly condemns outrageous terror attack in Kenya
India has strongly condemned the outrageous terror attack on a university campus in Kenya that killed at least 70 students, saying the international community needs to further strengthen its fight against terrorism.
“India strongly condemns barbaric terrorist attack on a university campus at Garissa in north-eastern Kenya,” the External Affairs Ministry said.
The “Government of India strongly condemns the barbaric terrorist attack on a university campus at Garissa” in north-eastern Kenya in which scores of people are reported to have been killed, it said in a statement.
“We stand in solidarity and sympathy with the bereaved families and the injured, and convey our heart-felt condolences to the Government and people of Kenya,” it said.
“This outrageous terrorist act is yet another reminder that the menace of terrorism continues to threaten us all and the international community needs to further strengthen its fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the statement added.
The Al-Qaeda-linked Somalia’s Shebab militant group killed at least 70 students in a pre-dawn attack on the university – Kenya’s deadliest attack since US embassy bombings in 1998.
