MANGALURU/UDUPI: Despite enough supply, chicken prices rise

MANGALURU: Leveraging the heat wave that killed more than 17 million birds in May, the chicken breeders in the coast - taking a cue from their counterparts across the country-have increased the landing price of live birds to Rs 100 to Rs 105 per kilogram.
For a week now, live broiler chicken is being sold at Rs 120 to Rs 135 per kg. As of Monday, chicken was selling at Rs 125 per kg. In the past two months, the live bird landing cost was hovering between Rs 80 to Rs 89 per kg. "Although there are four large breeders and plenty of small ones at undivided Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, which is enough to meet the demand, the price has been hiked simply because of the trend elsewhere," said a retailer on condition of anonymity.
Retailers have been having a torrid time since they under contractual obligations to supply poultry meat to hotels and restaurants. The retailer noted that cartelization has led to this phenomenon with breeders taking the minimum of the prevailing price to determine rates here though the production cost is the same and has not seen an increase over the years.
"The landing price at Rs 74 is more than remunerative for the breeder. However, they are enjoying their windfall luck, taking a cue from Namakkal and Bengaluru markets and both retailers and customers are bearing the brunt of it," the retailer added. The city gets an average of 8 to 10 truckloads of live birds and also source from Hassan and Chikmagalur in case there is an increased demand. The transportation of live birds is Rs 8 per kilo from Bengaluru to Mangaluru.
Poultry retailer Norbert Crasta at Kadri Market said that though suppliers attribute the death of birds to to heat wave, he questions why it should affect rates here as this is not the case here.
"Local farmers are working out the rates looking at rest of the markets. When prices go up, they hike it," said Crasta clearly indicating that local breeders are profiteering." More price reduction will come only when monsoon hits affected areas where heat wave killed birds," he added.
