Nylon thread can be seen in the roti ordered at the restaurant in Abu Dhabi.

He said that waiters apologised after finding the thread in the Indian bread he bought at the Abu Dhabi food outlet.

A customer at an Abu Dhabi restaurant was shocked to find a piece of nylon thread in the Indian bread he ordered.
 
Gaurav Mehta was dining at Sangeetha Vegetarian Restaurant on Salam Street in Abu Dhabi on Sunday when he claims he noticed the piece of white nylon in his bread.
 
"I had already paid for the food," he told Khaleej Times. "I told them, but nothing happened. It was a long nylon thread."
 
"It’s a good thing I didn’t eat it. Thread cannot be digested," he added. According to Mehta, while the waiters apologised, the person in charge of the restaurant did not. "But this isn’t about staff apology or a free meal, but the restaurant’s hygiene," Mehta added. "I think people should know this is going on."
 
Another customer, Tabrez, said he was seated next to Mehta and witnessed the incident. "I was eating beside him, and fortunately I was able to see his plate and the piece of nylon," he said. "That was the first time we met."
 
Tabrez said he had eaten at Sangeetha before, but now worries that the restaurant’s management is not appropriately concerned about food safety.
 
"The food was defective. I think he (the restaurant’s owner) was not caring," he said. "We don’t want anything to happen to this restaurant, except that they enforce hygiene."
 
"This is a well-known brand," Tabrez added. "We don’t want to harm anybody, but they must enforce standards. My concern is that the owner doesn’t care."
 
One of Sangeetha’s managing partners, Rohit Padmanabha, said the restaurant had asked Abu Dhabi authorities to help investigate the incident.
 
"We are cooperating with authorities, and they will come and do an inspection," he said. "We will do as they advise."
 
Padmanabha said the restaurant’s management is still unsure of what exactly occurred.
 
"We still aren’t sure it’s true. Until it is sorted, we’d like to go slow and find out what the real issue is, and do the needful," he said. "If it’s true we will take corrective action."
 
Sangeetha has three branches in Abu Dhabi and three in Dubai, as well as 30 branches across India and locations in London, Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Sunnyvale, California.
 
Notably, in January 2013 Dubai Municipality awarded Sangeetha’s Bur Dubai branch with a special food safety award for maintaining high standards among small-scale eateries in the Emirate.

Omani cop in dock for having Rs402,000 in counterfeit currency

He converted the counterfeit Indian currency into dirhams at a money exchange in Abu Hail, Dubai.

A policeman has been brought to trial for allegedly possessing counterfeit Indian rupees with the intent of circulating. The 37-year-old Omani cop has been charged in the Court of First Instance with possession of Rs402,000.
 
The case dates back to October 20, last year.
 
An Indian supervisor at a money exchange in Abu Hail, Dubai, said in the public prosecution investigation that the defendant visited them that day and handed over Rs402,000.
 
"We converted it into local currency for him, and he got Dh22,914. However, the following day when the cash was scanned with a special detector at our headquarters, we found it was counterfeit."
 
According to the criminal evidence report, the bills the defendant possessed were counterfeit, but so close to original that it could fool anybody, even those working in the money exchange field.
 
The accused reportedly admitted in the investigation that the individual caught on camera at the exchange office’s CCTV was him. The court has adjourned the hearing to August 23.
