Udupi: Underworld don Bannanje Raja was brought to Udupi on Saturday, August 15 amidst tight security, in connection to the Ankola Shootout case of 2014.
Udupi SP Annamalai is the investigation officer for the Ankola shootout case where a businessman named R N Naik was hacked to death.
Raja was brought to Udupi SP’s office in and was then taken to an undisclosed location.
As Raja claimed that he was suffering from health complications he was forwarded for medical check-up before being produced at the town police station.
Raja was arrested in Morocco in February this year, was brought to New Delhi on Friday August 14. He was brought down to Belagavi on Friday and was produced before the Court around 8.45 pm. The Court has remanded him to police custody for 15 days.
Security was stepped up as Raja is said to have claimed threats from underworld elements Muthappa Rai and Ravi Poojary.
As per sources there are 44 cases pending against Raja, out of which 16 cases are from Karnataka itself.
Raja is said to have left India in 1996 and since then had been operating from Dubai. His name entered the criminal world in 1991 with murder of Kokkarne Kushal Shetty.
Since then, Raja has been accused is several extortion, attempt to murder, assault and murder cases.
