MIA gets World Quality Commitment Award
Mangaluru: Mangaluru International Airport has received the World Quality Commitment (WQC) award in Gold category, which was instituted by the Spain-based Business Initiative Directions (BID). With this, the MIA is the only airport from India to get the award.
Speaking to presspersons Airport Director JT Radhakrishna said that the MIA did not apply for the award, instead the BID took the decision to present this award after the research and analysis carried out by quality hunters, entrepreneurs, and experts in quality to recognise the contribution of Mangaluru International Airport in terms of leadership, quality and excellence.
The selection was made on the basis of criteria of total quality management, ISO certification, customer satisfaction, business results, and continuous developments for passenger amenities, innovation, growth and facilities to stakeholders, he said.
The award was presented to the Airport Director at Paris on October 25.
MIA to have primary radar after June 2016
Mangaluru: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has sanctioned a primary radar for Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) as a ’special case’ to supplement the secondary radar that is being used presently at the airport.
The primary radar will be in place after June 2016 and once in place, it will reduce the diversion of aircraft to other airports because of inclement weather.
MIA Director J T Radhakrishna said that the primary radar equipment costing about Rs 20 cr has been received by the MIA and the same will be installed in a new building adjacent to the CISF barracks on AAI property and close to the new air traffic control complex. The work of constructing the new building is currently underway at an estimated cost of around Rs 5 crore.
The installation of the radar will ensure the safe movement of aircraft during bad weather, he said, adding that given the extreme climatic conditions that the region experiences, this will vastly improve aircraft operations.
2 kg gold powder concealed in essential commodities seized at MIA
Mangaluru: The Customs sleuths at Mangalore International Airport have seized about 2kg of gold powder valued over Rs 53 lakh from two passengers who arrived from Dubai.
The coarse powder gold was concealed in items like tooth pastes, shampoo, face cream, boost powder, Vaseline etc which were in possession of the passengers.
The passengers were arrested on Wednesday and gold was seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962.
The arrested were later produced before the principal civil judge (senior division) and chief judicial magistrate, Mangaluru, who remanded them to judicial custody on Thursday for 15 days. Further investigation is on.
