Mangaluru: Festive mood was overshadowed by tension and uncertainty in Mangaluru city, which wore a deserted look on Friday morning following tension in Bantwal area, that was sparked off due to killing of a youth and pelting of stones at the SDPI meet on Thursday.
 
Buses and even auto rickshaw remained off road on Friday and commercial establishments, schools and colleges remained closed.

Thus the bundh called for by the Vishwa Hindu Parishat and the Bajrang Dal was complete. Though the organisations, on Thursday clarified that they will only stage a protest on Friday, November 13 and would not go for a bundh, killing of a youth in Bantwal on Thursday evening resulted in the organisation going in for a bundh.
 
Holiday has been declared for schools and colleges and Section 144 has been imposed for three days. Roads were empty with only private vehicles plying. Most of the people who remained stranded in railway station and bus stops had to walk their way to their respective destinations.
 
As per reports, some miscreants even resorted to burning tyres at Bikarnakatte, Padua and Ullal area during wee hours of Friday.
 
The administration has stepped up security in the district and police vehicles are constantly on patrol.
 
However, the situation in the city has been peaceful from Friday morning.

Bantwal turns tense after miscreants kill youth

Bantwal: A youth was stabbed to death at Manihalla near B C Road on Thursday night by a group of miscreants while another youth was injured.
 
Harish (28), a resident of Navoor, succumbed to stab injuries while his friend Samiulla has been admitted to a hospital.
 
It is said that the two had been to a playground to play cricket and while returning home, they were attacked by a gang near Old Gate area. When the gang was attacking Harish, Samiulla rushed to his help, but ended up being injured.
 
A seriously injured Harish was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead.
 
The killing left Bantwal tense and to avert untoward incidents in the area, the police have stepped up security in the region.
