Print MANGALURU: If you haven’t received letters from your loved ones or if you have missed any job interviews, blame this postman. Ashok, 30, attached to Kodialbail post office here, had stacked up nearly 4,000 letters for over two years. The department has suspended him and will sack him if he’s found guilty.
The incident came to light in October after Ashok failed to pay rent of his house near Surathkal. The owner decided to break open the lock and evict Ashok from the house. To his surprise, as he entered, he found thousands of letters scattered inside the house.
"We found over 4,000 undelivered posts, including Aadhaar cards, personal letters, bank and job offer letters, magazines and greeting cards," an investigating officer said.
"Though thousands of letters were not delivered, we haven’t received a single complaint so far," he added.
Ashok joined postal services as a Grameen Daka Sevak in Mukka post office two years ago. He was promoted as a postman and was posted to Kodialbail in June after he cleared the department exam. "We found letters of both Mukka and Kodialbail jurisdictions at Ashok’s house," the officer said.
Jagadish Pai, postal superintendent officer, Mangaluru division, said the postal inspector is investigating the case and the probe will be completed in five months.
What saved Ashok was prompt delivery of speed posts, registered posts and money orders. "Since he delivered these letters, there was no complaint against him. Based on a preliminary report, we have suspended Ashok. It took nearly a month for us to deliver these letters," said investigating officer Mahesh O. Sources said the department is verifying all the letters delivered by him in the past six months.
