Kodagu: Nowadays, people are being duped in several ways and one such example is the lucky dip scheme.
In November 2014, a scheme was initiated by in the name of Vishalkshi Charitable Trust at Aranthodu village in Sullia. Accordingly, every member was required to pay Rs 200 per week for 55 weeks. A draw would be held twice a week and lucky members need not pay the amount for that particular week. The scheme also mentioned that those who had not receive any prizes throughout the draw would be given prizes within 90 days.
The sponsors appointed agents in Kodagu. The scheme offered 6 Alto 800 cars, 36 bikes, 17 scooters, 6 grams gold for 27 winners and many other prizes. People from Somawarpete and other places gave in to temptation and joined the scheme. Initially, regular announcements were made regarding the winners. However, the people alleged that though 55 weeks were gone by they had not received consolation prizes. Some of them also signed up for the scheme in multiple names and had paid up to Rs 44,000.
A complaint was filed regarding it in February 2016 at Somawarpete police station. The scheme owner Honnappa was summoned and asked to repay the amount by May 27, but he failed to do so, He was yet again called on Thursday and he agreed to give a cheque for Rs 50 lakh. The police suspecting him inquired with the bank and found out that it was a joint account with his wife. The police then ordered Honnappa to repay the money by next Monday or else legal action would be taken. He was let off after he furnished a surety bond.
