‘Sea Hawks,’ paying tribute to 26/11 attack, swims 1,031 kms; arrives in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: Team Sea Hawks, led by Wing Commander Paramvir Singh, who had taken the task of paying a tribute to martyrs and victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, left from Gateway of India, Mumbai at 6.20 pm on November 26, reached Mangaluru on Thursday after swimming for 1,031 kilometers.
The team arrived at Tannirbhavi Beach, Mangaluru at about 4 pm on Thursday. They completed the task in 12 days.
The team swam non-stop day and night with each person swimming for an hour on a relay basis. A navigator and an escort boat accompanied the team throughout the journey. The team had planned to complete the journey through the Arabian Sea in about 14-15 days but managed to complete the feat two days earlier. The team was welcomed by members of the Rotary Club, the media as well as people of Mangaluru.
Team Sea Hawks managed to break two world records. First one being: the longest six person open-water swim – which was held by the US team Night Trains which swam 504 kilometers in 2015, the other record being the longest open-water relay swim by 200 swimmers in 2009 when they covered 684.75 kms.
Sea Hawks team leader Wing Commander Paramvir Singh said that the team also broke their previous year’s record of 433.11 kilometers by crossing 548 km mark at Panjim, Goa. He added that the historic swim was not only to pay tributes to the heroes of the 26/11 attack but also to the victims of the Uri and the Pathankot attacks.
