Mangalore University to award grace marks to sportspersons
Mangaluru: Mangalore University has decided to award grace marks to sportspersons who are compelled to miss classes or are unable to dedicate adequate time for studies due to training and participation. Sources say that the proposal would be implemented for those who had brought laurels to the University in sports.
The policy released by Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Sports said that the marks were awarded so that students could get through with examinations.
Kishore Kumar C K, Director of Physical Education, Mangalore University informed that the proposal would be implemented either from the on-going semester or from the next.
As per the proposal, for marks to be awarded, the undergraduate or post-graduate student-sportspersons would be required to represent the country, University at the zonal/all-India inter-university competitions/tournaments. Further, they would be required to secure any of the four places at the inter-university zonal/all-India tournaments or one of the first three places in national/international tournaments conducted and recognized by official sports federations.
Sources say that maximum 15 grace marks in each paper would be awarded to the student only to enable him/her clear papers he/she had failed in a semester. For instance, if the pass marks are 40 and the sportsperson gets 35 marks, he/she shall be awarded five marks to make it 40.
Sportspersons would be required to apply to the University within the stipulated period and also produce relevant documents through the heads of the respective institutions to receive grace marks.
