Lawsuit filed against Eight Udupi Mutts to form Written Constitution

Udupi: Shri Vishva Vijaya, former junior Peetadhipathi of Sri Pejawar Mutt, Udupi has filed a suit before the court of principal civil judge at Ududpi on Monday against Pejawar Mutt Seer Shri Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji and other seven seers of mutts in Udupi urging them to form a written constitution to protect rich heritage and smooth functioning of eight mutts in Ududpi.

“In order to maintain harmony among  eight mutts at Udupi and to set right the deterioration in the values, culture, customs, code of conduct and traditions a written constitution is necessary which would restore the age old glory and dignity of the samsthanam i.e. a composite unit. The samsthanam consisting of eight mutts are interlinked should be a role model for the politicians, teaching fraternity and to inculcate moral and ethical values in the society which is possible only through a code of conduct among themselves,” said Shri Vishva Vijaya in a release.

Shri Vishva Vijaya and other devotees had sent a lawyer notice on January 04, 2016 to eight Peetadhipathis to form a registered written constitution with bye-laws among themselves. Even after a year the Peetadhipathis have been delaying to form a constitution, he said.

Shri Vishva Vijaya has said that he has no personal motive, demand, claim or position except the formation of registered written constitution for eight mutts in the larger future interest of the society.

“The recent bitter developments, disagreements, acrimony and revolts  during last forty years, especially on the occasion of paryaya festivals by and among peetadhipathis of eight mutts at Udupi has brought total discredit to the Holy Samsthanam established by Sriman Madhvacharya, the founder of Dwaitha Philosophy in 13th century,” he said.

When Shri Vishva Vijaya returned to India after a successful mission in USA and Canada in 1987 Shri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji of Sri Puthige Mutt, Udupi had declared a war against former’s foreign tour and was successful in outcasting and unseating him from the peetha. Against his own derogatory remarks about foreign tour of Shri Vishva Vijaya, the same Shri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji went abroad inspite of the opposition from all other seven peetadhipathis, still continues to hold and enjoy the privileges of peetha against the wishes of other peetadhipathis, he said.

There are many other issues on which there exists a lot of disharmony and conflicting views and conduct among peetadhipathis. It is absolutely necessary to have a uniform code of conduct in the operation of the mutts since they represent Sri Madhwa Samsthanam, a composite unit, he concluded.
