Blood on the road: Karnataka fourth

The numbers are shocking, if not alarming. As per the latest figures, over 400 people die in road accidents every day in the country. While Uttar Pradesh accounts for the most number of fatalities, Karnataka is at the fourth place.

In 2017, Karnataka recorded 10,609 deaths in road accidents. However, compared to the 2016 data, the number has come down by 524.

According to the statistics provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in the Lok Sabha, as many as 10,609 people died in 2017 as against 11,133 in 2016.

Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 20,124 deaths followed by Tamil Nadu (16,157), Madhya Pradesh (12,264) and Rajasthan (10,444). Most accidents have been attributed to poor road infrastructure and rash and negligent driving.

The number of deaths in road accidents came down at the national level as well. As many as 1,47,913 deaths were reported across the country in 2017 as against 1,50,785 deaths in 2016.

State transport department officials attributed the drop in number of road accidents to several measures by the road safety cell of the state. Interestingly, no accident deaths were reported from Lakshadweep. The other low figures reported are: Andaman and Nicobar Islands (21), Daman and Diu (36), and Nagaland (41).
