US BOMB ALERT: Explosives sent to Clinton, Obama, CNN and Florida Democrat - FBI manhunt

HILLARY Clinton and former US President Barack Obama have been targeted in bomb scares with explosives sent to buildings in New York, Washington DC, California and Florida with the US on alert and residents in Manhattan ordered to take shelter as the FBI and Secret Service launch a major investigation.

The San Diego Union-Tribune building in California has been evacuated after a suspicious package was spotted

Explosives have been sent to Mrs Clinton’s New York home, Mr Obama’s Washington DC offices, CNN at the Time Warner building in New York and a Florida Democrat’s Miami office.

The FBI said the suspicious package was found at the First Couple’s residence in Westchester County in the suburbs of New York City, at 1am (local time) addressed to Hillary Clinton. 

It comes at the same time US secret service said it intercepted a suspicious package sent to Barack Obama’s office in Washington just a few hours after the discovery at the Clinton’s residence.

Officials said the device sent to the high profile US politicans was similar to one sent to the billionaire, the New York Times reports. 

It was not immediately clear where the bombs were discovered. 

The agency said it has now launched a "full scope criminal investigation". 

The White House condemned the bomb scares, and in a strongly-worded statement, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said: “We condemn the attempted violent attacks recently made against President Obama, President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and other public figures.

"These terrorising acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

"The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take all appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards."

The US President’s son, Donald Trump Jnr. also hit out on Twitter, and wrote: "As someone whose family has directly been the victim of these mail threats I condemn whoever did this regardless of party or ideology.

"This crap has to stop and I hope they end up in jail for a long time."

New Castle police said they assisted the FBI, Secret Service and Westchester County authorities

The US Secret Service said in a statement: "Early this morning, October 24, 2018, a second package addressed to the residence of Former President Barack Obama was intercepted by Secret Service personnel in Washington, DC.

"The packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such. 

“The protectees did not receive the packages nor were they at risk of receiving them.”

"The Secret Service has initiated a full scope criminal investigation that will leverage all available federal, state, and local resources to determine the source of the packages and identify those responsible." 

Sources described the device as an improvised explosive device (IED), according to reports from NY1. 

The NYPD also confirmed the Time Warner building in New York was evacuated on Wednesday morning after a suspicious package was found in the CNN post room.

The package contained a device that looked like a pipe, similar to those found at other locations, including the homes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

The network reported there were also wires in the package found in the CNN post room. 

CNN has reported the NYPD’s bomb squad "believes they have this under control" and the package appears to be an explosive device.

Two news presenters were on air shortly after 10am ET when a fire alarm was heard by viewers, and the network went to an ad break. 

It was not immediately known whether this package was similar to the suspicious packages sent to the homes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. 

New York Mayor Bill De Blasio told a news conference: This is clearly an act of terrorism."

He said authorities have increased security in the city after the explosive device was discovered at the Time Warner building.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo revealed an explosive device was also sent to his office, adding he "wouldn’t be surprised’ if more are sent.

BNO News has reported the US Secret Service has intercepted a suspicious package addressed to former US Attorney General Eric Holder. 

ABC news reporter Mike Levine has also tweeted, citing three sources, a suspicious package has been intercepted by Capitol Hill police, addressed to Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Walters. 

A building in San Diego containing the offices of Democratic Senator Kamala Harris and the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper have also been evacuated after more reports of a suspicious package.

There were also reports of a suspicious package sent to the White House had been intercepted on Wednesday. 

But a person familair with the matter told Reuters this wasn’t the case. 

Local media in Florida say US Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s office has been evacuated after a suspicious package was found.

The bomb squad is on the scene and the area secured after a package was posted to the Sunrise office earlier today.

Sunrise Police said they were called to the Congresswoman;s office this morning near Sawgrass Corporate Parkway.

Residents have been urged to stay out of the area of NW 8th Street and NW 136th Street.

In California, staff at the San Diego Union-Tribune have evacuated their building after a suspicious package was spotted.

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted: “We condemn the attempted attacks against fmr Pres Obama, the Clintons, @CNN & others. These cowardly actions are despicable & have no place in this Country. Grateful for swift response of @SecretService, @FBI & local law enforcement. Those responsible will be brought to justice.”

Mr Pence was echoed by US President Donald Trump, who added: “I agree wholeheartedly!”

The bomb scares come just two days after an explosive device was found in the mailbox of the home of billionaire philanthropist George Soros in Westchester County, New York on Monday.
