Inter-caste couple enter wedlock at graveyard on Amavasya to beat superstition
Belagavi: Aiming to break superstitious beliefs that are very much prevalent in India, an inter-caste couple tied the nuptial knot at a Sadashivanagar graveyard here on Thursday on the occasion of Amavasya, considered to be inauspicious by many.
Former Minister Satish Jarkiholi in his bid to create awareness among people against such superstitious beliefs has been organising an anti-superstition programme on December 6 (death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar) every year under the aegis of ’Manav Bandhutva Vedike’. Too the surprise of several people gathered at the graveyard for the Vedike programme, the couple — Sopan Balakrishna Jamboti, a resident of Teerthkunde village of Belagavi taluk and Rekha N of Hire-Bagewadi village, Belagavi taluk got married on the day of Amavasya. Interestingly funeral rituals of a man were going on at the same time that the couple was getting married at the crematorium here.
Terming the marriage as a historical moment in Manav Bandhutva Vedike’s campaign against superstitions, Jarkiholi said that the by performing the marriage on occasion of Amavasya, the Vedike wanted to break the mindset of people who fear from taking up any work on the day. He handed the couple a Rs 50,000 cheque.
Prominent personalities like retired High Court Judge Justice H N Nagmohan Das, noted writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa and many progressive seers were also present.
