Manipal : There were no surprises in the South Zone Inter-University Badminton Tournament for women 2019-20 as last year’s semi-finalists went through to the last four stage without any hiccups. Defending champions Jain University, Bengaluru will take on Andhra University and University of Calicut, Kerala plays SRM Tamil Nadu in the semi-finals at 9 am on Thursday at the indoor Sports Complex, Marena. The final is scheduled for 1 pm

All four semi-final teams beat their opponents without having to play the second doubles. All recorded 2-0 victories. Jain University began their campaign with international ShikhaRajesGautam taking on K Vashnavi of Osmania. Shikha lost the first game to her nippy Osmania opponent and then had to draw deep from her experience to win the next two. But Shikha came back for the doubles with Ashwini Bhat and made short work of Vashnavi and Sahithi.

Last year’s runners-up University of Calicut did not have a problem against Anna University. They won both, singles and doubles, with ease. SRM too managed a comfortable win against hosts MAHE. Nivetha beat Stuti at 7 and 8 and then the doubles pair of Ramya and Nila beat Monish and Stuti at 13 and 10.

Andhra had a bit of a fight on their hands with both the singles player and their doubles pair being stretched to three games each. Nishita Varma dropped a game to Anjali before winning and the duo of Preethi and Akshitaalso dropped a game to Reza and Anjali before Andhra could clinch a semi-final berth.

Quarter-final Results:

Jain University, Bengaluru, KTK beat Osmania University 2-0

Singles – Shikha Rajesh Gautam beat K Vashnavi 14-21, 21-17 and 21-16.

Doubles -- Ashwini Bhat K/ Shikha Rajesh Gautam beat K Vashnavi and B Sahithi 21-18, 21-06.

University of Calicut, Kerala beat Anna University, TN 2-0:

Singles – Aswathy N beat A Aishwarya 21-19, 21-07.

Doubles – Nafeesah Sara Siraj and Sruthy KP beat S Akshaya and A. Aishwarya 21-08, 21-18. 

SRM IST Chennai, TN beat Manipal Academy of Higher Education 2-0:

Singles – M. Nivetha beat Stuti Parikh 21-07, 21-08.

Doubles – B.V.RamyaTulasi and V Nila beat Monisha  PC and Stuti Parikh 21-13, 21-10.

Andhra University, AP beat Mahatma Gandhi, Kerala 2-0:

Singles – P Nishita Varma beat Anjali Pradip 21-14, 20-22, 21-14.

Doubles – K Preethi and A Akshita beat Reza Farhath and Anjali Pradip  21-11, 17-21, 21-18.
