As the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh braces for the vote of confidence today, the chief minister has said that he will tender his resignation as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister. Addressing a press conference in Bhopal just hours ahead of the floor test, Kamal Nath said, "I am resigning and handing over my resignation to the Governor." Kamal Nath had called a press conference at 12 noon today ahead of the Assembly session. He accused the BJP of ’murdering democracy’ and plotting to pull down his government. It was speculated that the CM is expected to make an important announcement.

The government plunged into crisis after exit of 22 MLAs followed by former union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. It will take a floor test at 2 pm today. Both the Congress and the BJP have issued the crucial whip for their MLAs.

The Assembly Secretariat has called the session at 2 pm on the direction of the Supreme Court At present, the arithmetic of the Assembly seems to be in favour of the BJP, especially after Speaker N.P. Prajapati accepted the resignation of 16 more Congress MLAs on Thursday night.

The Legislative Assembly has 230 MLAs, of which 24 seats are vacant. A majority in the House of 206 MLAs will require the support of 104 MLAs. The BJP has 107 MLAs, and the Congress 92. The Congress has the support of the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and Independent MLAs, which totals up to 99.
