FM Sitharaman moves Bill to amend the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 in LS

Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates:  Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday moved The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2020 for consideration in Lok Sabha. The Finance Minister said that the amendment is to protect the depositors interest.

“We are trying to bring this amendment to protect the depositors. As in some unfortunate situation in banks, depositors are put to hardship,” said Sitharaman.

Earlier today,  Congress leader Anand Sharma questioned Union health minister Harsh Vardhan’s claim that the lockdown prevented approximately 14 to 29 lakh COVID-19 cases and 37,000-78,000 deaths in the country and asked the government to explain the basis of the claim. “Yesterday, the health minister said that this decision (lockdown) prevented approximately 14 to 29 lakh COVID-19 cases & 37,000-78,000 deaths. The house must be informed what is the scientific basis on which we’ve reached this conclusion,” Sharma said in Rajya Sabha.

Parliament Wednesday passed a bill to accord the status of an institution of national importance to a Jamnagar-based cluster of Ayurveda institutes. The Bill – ‘The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda Bill, 2020′ – was passed by a voice vote in Rajya Sabha.

Lok Sabha, will see Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will move two bills — The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020.

On Tuesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed the Lok Sabha on the border tensions between India and China, during which he said till now, there has been no mutually acceptable solution between the two countries. “China doesn’t recognise the traditional and customary alignment of the boundary. We consider that this alignment is based on well established geographical principals,” he said.

This time, the Parliament session is being held amid strict social distancing protocols due to the coronavirus pandemic.
