Students, teachers and institutions should share ideas for higher education
FVCK President Prof. K S Rangappa opines at former VCs’ conference at MU
Mangalore: Education should be the exchange of ideas between students, teachers and institutions. Their responsibilities are equally shared regarding the higher education, said Forum of Former Vice Chancellors of Karnataka State Universities (FVCK) President and Mysore University former vice chancellor Prof. K S Rangappa.
Delivering his introductory remarks at the conference on ‘Strategies for Betterment of Higher Education and Governance of Universities’, organised by the Mangalore University in association with the FVCK at Mangala Auditorium of Mangalore University here on Monday, Prof. K S Rangappa added that vacant faculty positions in the universities should be filled. Old education institutions should be strengthened. Board of Governors (BOG) should take major decisions about the universities, not the politicians, he added.
In his inaugural address, Executive Vice President and Former Vice Chancellor of MAHE Dr.Vinod Bhat opined that for the improvement of an institution of an institution NAAC accreditation should be made mandatory. It should be the question of existence. For the improvement of the quality of higher education, the contribution each staff is improvement, he said. Meanwhile, he said that Role of teacher should be like a mentor, facilitator. Technology cannot substitute classroom teaching, but it can help. So, we should create good teachers.
In his presidential remarks, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof. P Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya opined that we are qualified but not competent. We should adopt continuous learning, improvement and development process in every level of higher education. Knowledge, attitude, skills, constructive resourceful learning habit, ability to handle situation are important. “We should aim at outcome based education. There should not be any kind of negative approach about the implementation about the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP)- 2020,” he added.
Vice Chancellor of Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh and a member of the National Steering Committee for National Curriculum Framework Development Dr. T.V. Kattimani said that NEP- 2020 will provide skill oriented education to the students. It motivates innovation and research in the education with importance to the local languages and culture. It also helps to the management of higher education institutions, he added.
Former Vice Chancellors, faculties of the University, the Principals and IQAC coordinators of the colleges affiliated to Mangalore University and members of University bodies were present. Mangalore University Registrar Prof. Kishor Kumar C K welcomed the guests. Registrar (Evaluation) Prof. P L Dharma extended vote of thanks. Finance Officer Prof. K S Jayappa, Convenor Prof. Jayaraj Amin were also present.
