Tamil Nadu, July 11, 2012: A senior police official confirmed that a letter to this effect has been sent to the federal government.

The Tamil Nadu police have recommended the federal government to cancel the licenses of 90 non-government organizations (NGOS) working in the state.

A senior police official confirmed that a letter to this effect has been sent through the state home department.

Four teams which scrutinized more than 200 applications of NGOs for renewing of licenses since March have found that nearly 90 of them are ineligible because of the way they spent their funds.

“Most of the NGOs were found to have suspicious dealings. Many of them did not maintain proper accounts and were not using money for the purpose they were meant for,” a police official said.

The official said that they were verifying the beneficiaries mentioned by the NGOs.

Some NGOs were found to have used more than 80 percent of the funds for administration purpose and the beneficiaries got only the rest, the official added.

NGOs functioning in India should renew their licenses once in five years, bringing them under the scanner of the police department during the licensing process.

India has more than 40,000 registered NGOs’ under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

Some of them came under scrutiny recently after the anti-nuclear protests in Koodankulam, Tamil Nadu.

In February, the federal government cancelled the licenses of three NGOs for supporting the protestors. The work at the plant came to halt for more than six months due to the protests by local people, demanding shutting down of the nuclear facility.

Mumbai: Chaos at Royalty pub gives nuns sleepless nights

The nuns from St Paul’s institute (R) have alleged that parties at pub Royalty (L) continue till early morning, causing a nuisance for the neighbourhood

The nuns from St Paul’s institute (R) have alleged that parties at pub Royalty (L) continue till early morning, causing a nuisance for the neighbourhood

Mumbai, July, 2012: The CSF joins community groups and others in taking up the issue of actor Sohail Khan’s pub, which has troubled nuns and residents of Bandra. More info soon. Read a media report…

A Khar pub owned by Bollywood actor Sohail Khan is proving to be a nuisance for nuns. Sisters of St Paul institute next door, who claim that their repeated complaints to the police about drunken brawls and parking issues have fallen on deaf ears.

Neighbouring residents and nuns from the training institute say the ruckus that goes on at pub Royalty till the wee hours of the morning, is making it impossible for them to sleep at night. Apart from late-night entries and chaos due to parking problems, the nuns are also incensed by drivers and bouncers chucking beer cans and liquor bottles in the institute premises. The nuns have also complained that some of these miscreants even relieve themselves in the premises.

“The chaos continues from 11.30 in the night till 4.30 in the morning. We have to get up early in the morning, so we hardly get any sleep because of the shouting and screaming on the roads. We even have to put up with drivers urinating on our compound walls,” said a nun on condition of anonymity.

Manuela Saldanha, chairperson of revival citizen group said, “The problems of noise pollution, overcrowding, parking woes on a 40-foot road continue. A bar in a residential area is a nuisance. We can’t sleep at night because of all the noise. Plus, we have to put up with the drunkards and traffic jams.”   “I am also fighting for the problems faced by the nuns of St Paul’s institute. Drivers and bouncers get drunk and shout abuses in the night. Why don’t the police do anything?” she added.

Royalty, previously owned by celebrities like DJ Aqeel, actress Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra, and now Sohail Khan, has a history of running into trouble with locals. The pub reopened in November 2011 after a year-long shutdown in the face of bitter opposition from nearby residents.

Residents come out in support
Residents’s associations too have taken up the issue with a vengeance. Anandani Thakoor, secretary of Khar Residents Association said, “We have handed over a resolution to the police about the steps to be taken regarding pubs and bars in residential areas. We want special zones for clubs in Bandra.”

When asked about the issue, Additional Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil (West region) said, “There are specific checks conducted in troubled areas where such pubs operate to ensure that they follow the norms. The residents have given us names of pubs which are causing a nuisance and we are looking into it.”

Prashant Gunjalkar, co-owner and Sohail Khan did not respond despite repeated attempts to contact them. When contacted, Nelson, the pub’s manager said, “We have all permissions in place and all allegations are false.”
