TODY

The Kerala High Court on Thursday asked the State Government to consider imposing total prohibition on the sale of toddy, the natural light liquor extracted from coconut trees and other palm trees. The court hoped that the Government would take a “bold” decision on the matter at least in the coming financial year.

Describing toddy shops as places of crime and violence, a division bench of the High Court said sale of toddy would have to be stopped to put an end to the sale of arrack (crude alcohol) and spurious liquor in the name of toddy. The court could not take a decision on the matter as it was a policy affair but the Government should think of ways for putting an end to toddy sale, it said.

It was not nice to see “disgraceful” toddy shops in every nook and corner of emerging Kerala, the court said. Observing that toddy was being described as light liquor, the court asked why the Government should promote it when beer was being sold through the retail liquor outlets of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation.

Toddy is being sold through over 4,500 outlets in Kerala and most of them are in rural areas.  Several thousands are employed in this sector. “The prescription for total prohibition of toddy sale as a remedy for the disease of spurious liquor is sure to kick of a controversy,” said a senior lawyer of the High Court.

Over the years, toddy has become an inalienable aspect of tourism in God’s Own Country and it is considered in the sector more as a part of Kerala’s ethnic food than as liquor. But the simple fact that the toddy extracted from palm trees forms only a small part of the drink consumed in Kerala proves that spurious liquor is being sold rampantly.

When everyone is shouting against FDI in retail sector saying that it will kill jobs. No drunkards have the voice to raise when such actions been taken. Ban is one thing, raising prices at will is another problem. We drunkards speak loudly when on a high and go to a mute mode when in a sober state. And the government gives a damn for our views.
