MJM, a 49-year-old Bangladeshi computer operator, allegedly possessed forged Indian currency notes worth 18.5 million rupees, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.

Police had got a tip-off that the accused possessed large amount of forged India rupees and was intending to smuggle them out of the UAE to his home country via a shipping company.

“We checked the consignments at the shipping company and we found nine boxes where the name of the sender and receiver were written.  MJM was arrested in the Naif area,” testified Captain Waleed Nasser.

“The boxes were tied with a rope and wrapped with scotch tape. We had to cut the rope and remove the wrapping paper and pieces of cardboard underneath to reach to the currency notes. Other boxes contained abayas, textiles and cigarettes,” he testified.

HA, a Bangladeshi worker in the shipping company, testified that he did not check the nine boxes as the value of the goods was only Dh12,000. The sender had kept them in the office and went to bring the shipping fees.

The accused confessed to trying to smuggle out the fake notes against a commission which is much more than the shipping fees, the Prosecution noted.

The Court adjourned the case for verdict until October 21.
