Mangalore: 46 leaders from the various districts of Kerala, including Kasaragod, assembled for a 2-days’ Conference, to discuss various issues affecting Konknni language and people in Kerala.

At 9.30, there was a meaningful Inaugural in which the 7 colours of Konkani were symbolically poured into a long transparent glass and the Konkani flag was planted atop. Shri K. K. Utharan, Vice-President – JKS, Shri Roy Castelino, Treasurer – JKS, Dr. K. S. Govindan, Shri Stany Alvares, Shri Roshan Kayyar, Ms. Daphny Veigas and Shri Louis Pinto were on stage.

The deliberations began with an Introductory Session, which was followed by the ‘10 Commandments of Konkani’ and the morning session concluded with all delegates learning to count in Konkani.

In the afternoon session, the entire gathering split into various groups and analyzed the Konkani situation in Kerala. Later, the findings of the various groups were placed before the entire gathering. That evening, a revolutionary play titled ‘Bhuke Uzo’ was presented by the Kalakul Theatre Repertory. The play was much appreciated for its content and presentation.

The second day’s proceedings began with the theme of Language, Culture and Identity. Shri Gopala Gowda directed the proceedings which was interspersed with ‘gummott khell’, ‘tonniyo khell’ and ‘dori khell’, presented by his 15-strong Kudmi troupe from Yedapadavu.

That afternoon, once again the group split into smaller groups to crystallize the Resolutions to be passed at the Conference. In the Final Session, the following Resolutions were unanimously passed –

1. The Conference resolves and pledges to preserve Konkani language and cultural identity – at home, in our surroundings and in the world.

2. The Conference expresses its happiness over the establishment of the Kerala Konkani Academy by the Government of Kerala. But places on record its displeasure that the Government has been partial to one community by appointing the Chairman, the Vice-Chairman and the Secretary and 14 members from one community, while unjustly appointing only 2 members from the majority Kudmi community. The Conference demands that this partiality be remedied and that different communities of Konkani be given just representation, proportionate to the strength of each community, and certainly not on the basis of caste and economic superiority of any one community.

3. The Conference resolves to request the Government of Kerala to introduce forthwith Konkani in the school curriculum, and while doing so, to use the Malayalam script and not the Devanagari script, as advocated by the economically powerful minority community. The dialect to be used should also be that of the majority Konkani community, as it will be the children belonging to this community, who will learn Konkani in the Government Schools and Government-aided Schools.

4. The Conference also requests the JKS, the following –

a)  Help, guidance and assistance in printing, publishing and popularizing Konkani in the Malayalam script.

b)  To conduct Konkani Awareness campaigns in Kerala.

c)  To establish Konkani organizations, specially north of Calicut.

The above resolutions will be forwarded to the concerned authorities and JKS will do everything in its power to impress upon the Government of Kerala to act immediately on the issues raised.

1.  A meeting has been convened in Kumbla on Sun., March 3, 2013, to establish the ‘Kerala Konkani Songhotton’ in Kasaragod.

2. ‘Dev-stutent Konknni’: JKS in association with Konkani Rakann Sanchalan – Chikmagalur and Hassan, is organizing a Day’s Conference on Sun., March 10, 2013, at the Catholic Club, Chikmagalur, to discuss in detail the issue of ‘Konkani in Liturgy’ and chalk-out a Plan of Action.
